SOLAR THERMAL ELECTRIC POWER GENERATION

It is interesting to follow Internet discussions on electricity generation from solar thermal power! People talk about mega power plants with thousands of reflective mirrors focusing the sun's rays on a central tower, or alternatively, about water/air solar heaters panel.  Again I ask: Why not use cheap and simple technology developed by Israel, around 1970 to generate in the backyard of every home, electricity in the average power like 5KW - 110V/220Vac, 24 hours / day? An elementary engine using CO2 as working fluid and a reservoir of solar thermal energy installed in the basement resolve the issue.  See  "Application Schematic" above and.previous blogs about this matter.

ORC CYCLES - THERMAL EFFICIENCY, ECONOMY AND ENVIRONMENT

Considering the low thermal efficiency of ORC cycle, from 5% to 12% (previous Blog) and the 28% effective in a conventional power plant, we have at worst case:

5% x FREE ENERGY FROM THE SUN x RENEWABLE AND CLEAN VALUE   =  INFINITY  VALUE!
28% x COST OF FUEL x FINITY VALUE AND POLLUTANT   =  FINITY  VALUE !!!

From all points of view:    INFINITY VALUE>>> FINITY VALUE

CICLOS ORC - RENDIMENTO TÉRMICO, ECONOMIA E MEIO AMBIENTE

5%  x ENERGIA LIVRE DO SOL, LIMPA E RENOVÁVEL = VALOR INFINITO!
28% x CUSTO COM COMBUSTÍVEL FINITO E POLUENTE = VALOR FINITO!!!

THERMO MECHANIC SOLAR POWER GENERATION – "ORC CYCLE”

The generation of electricity from solar energy of “Low Enthalpy Resources” indicates temperatures around 300°C in the "Hot Source" and 25°C in the "Cold Source". Working fluid would be "NH4OH" solution, or as alternative, "Freon Green” gas. The overall efficiency of the system will be 12%. The carbon gas (CO2) working as thermodynamic fluid reduces the efficiency of the system to 4%. However, results lower equipment costs in the case of market choice for household applications.

There will be good return over investments (ROI), independent of the “Organic Rankine Cycle” ( ORC ) with “low efficiency” because “low temperature” at hot source. The free, clean and renewable solar energy largely offset fuel costs, more logistic, store and handling of products like: biogas, biomass, natural gas, and diesel, as usual, in thermodynamics cycles of power plants, working with hot source in the range of 500°C.  Differences in implementation costs between PVs and solar thermo mechanics power plants are significant! Fixed PV panels towards to the South Geographic (in the northern hemisphere) has high implementation cost in terms of availability of energy put in "Watts per square meter of land, produced with reasonable efficiency only during days up to six hours (10am to 16 pm).  PVs are even more expensive in "KW" consumed in the morning, evening and night, with energy demand in 110V 50/60 Hz ( KWh ) through bank of batteries, inverters and load controller.

However, PVs are visually beautiful and from the point of view of financial investor require simple maintenance. In practice, does not occur in power plants. The attractive appearance and simplicity of a simple panel, used to supply "very light 12V DC electric loads" promotes easy marketing business, among other interests away from engineering field.

SOLAR ENERGY

Today, we maintain focus on private area of Research and Development of electronic devices to generate clean and sustainable energy. Soon, we will have news about it!  In the recent past, when we worked to develop electric solar power from low temperatures sources, with "Hot Source" up to 300°C and "Cold Source around 30°C (or lower) we always like to know why there are no entrepreneurs in Brazilian market. We refer a simple and inexpensive engine to work with "green freon", or even, "CO2". Certainly, we do not want to discuss about effectiveness of thermal machines running at "low temperatures".  At least in Brazil, a modest Rankine Cycle would be largely offset by ZERO cost of solar heat in most of country! We do not understand why there are no small gensets up to 5 kW, capable of supply electric power, cooled air and hot water for residential and local places, like rural water pumps, and so on.  We think small engines would supply energy for hundreds of thousands of demand consumption! The question remains: Wants the government local production of energy without collecting taxes, charges and votes?
